Many people have thick, discolored toenails; which is commonly causes by a fungal infection. Any injury to the nail predisposes it to a fungal infection. Additionally, fungus likes to grown in dark, warm environments. So, our feet are the perfect environment for fungus. It is possible to develop a fungal infection of the fingernail. But, toenail infections are much more common.
Not every thick, discolored nail has a fungal infection. If it is unclear, a clipping of the nail can be tested in one of two ways – a KOH test or a fungal culture.
Treatment depends on the extent of infection. If caught early, topical antifungals may be effective. Sometimes an oral medication is prescribed to treat the fungal infection.
